Erythema multiforme

Characteristic features:

  • vesicles and bullae formation

  • common in infants till young adults

  • features in three types: major (mucocutaneous ocular), minor (mucocutaneous) and chronic

  • desquamative gingivitis

  • bloody crusted lips

  • iris/target lesion, dull red maculopapular lesion on extremities and neck

  • large, deep, irregular, hemorrhagic ulcers

  • immunologically-mediated

Differential diagnosis:

  • pemphigus vulgaris

  • benign mucous membrane pemphigoid

benign mucous membrane pemphigoid
  • Acute herpetic gingivostomatitis
